Couch Arm Cover
Couch Arm Cover
:: CURRENT DELIVERY TIME :: MID-JANUARY 2018 ::
Finally! An attractive solution to saving the couch your pet has loved a little too heavily.
We've made a number of these couch arm wraps with a front panel to cover up our clients' pet-damaged armchairs and couches. It seemed worthwhile to make it a permanent part of our collection, to help out others looking for a more permanent and aesthetically pleasing solution that also gives you an extra stable surface for your coffee!
We make these solid wood arm wraps to order, custom fit for your couch, sofa or ottoman. There is no metal hardware - just professional and strong cabinetmaker-grade joinery techniques, formaldehyde-free adhesives, and a zero-VOC finish that's silky to the touch and 100% food-safe to boot.
We want you to know exactly what goes into making each piece, so you can understand the value of your sofa arm wrap, and feel good about buying and using it. We believe wholeheartedly in transparency! Please read on, and feel free to contact us with any questions once you're done!
:: The wood::
These arm wraps demand wider pieces of wood than we tend to have in our extensive salvaged wood shed. We would love to make these exclusively from FSC certified lumber but are having a hard time sourcing it locally - hopefully as more woodworkers in our area demand it, supply will catch up! If you'd like for your couch arm wrap to be made from salvaged wood (we salute you!), please contact us for the current wood options!
:: How we make it ::
We make each of these wraps on demand, custom built for your exact furniture. We start with locally sourced, native species hardwood trees, kiln-dried and milled into rough boards that we resaw, joint, and plane into ~3" wide strips.
We join these strips together with formaldehyde-free glue, alternating the grain direction of each strip in order to minimize wood movement and maximize strength. Once we have our panels, we use what's called an edge lamination to create the "I_I" shape, with the front panel in place.
:: How we finish it ::
We sand every surface to a satiny 180 grit, and then finish your couch arm wrap with two hand rubbed applications of zero-VOC, all natural hard wax oil. Hard wax oil costs a pretty penny, but it is brilliant for so many reasons:
: It's completely safe for us to work with (Rachel has a chronic illness and is super sensitive to chemicals, so that's really important to us), and completely safe for you and your family.
: It is made of organic resins, waxes and oils, and releases absolutely no (zero!) Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs).
: This stuff is certified in Europe for use on children's toys! That means wayward teething children aren't at risk for accidental inhalation of chemicals, which is a risk with a varnish or lacquer finish.
: It's a breeze to clean and maintain - simply wipe with a damp cloth!
: Last but not least, it works by penetrating into the wood fibers, strengthening them while leaving the natural surface of the wood to shine. It doesn't sit on the surface like a varnish or lacquer finish, and therefore isn't prone to clouding, chipping or scratching.
:: No metal hardware! ::
Our arm wraps are not screwed, nailed or made with any kind of metal fasteners. They are as beautiful on the inside as they are on the outside, and will not mar your couch whatsoever. This also makes them 100% biodegradable.
:: Wood options ::
We make these in either solid cherry, solid maple, solid walnut or solid white oak. We can do other species on request. Simply choose your preferred wood from the drop down menu on the right!
The last image shows a sampling of the four woods - please keep in mind that wood, being a natural material, can have many variations. We are happy to dial it in to match your other furniture, i.e. we can choose the darker walnut pieces if you have a dark walnut coffee table you'd like to match, etc. Please feel free to send us images so we can do our best match-making!
:: Measurements ::
Our arm covers are 14 inches long, and the drops are 5 inches. The measurement we require from you is the width, i.e. thickness of your sofa / couch arm.
Image 4 illustrates how best to take this measurement. - we recommend using another person, two books and a flat ruler to get the most accurate measurement. Be careful not to apply pressure to the couch, in order not to condense any of the upholstery. Input this measurement when you order, by using the drop down menu on the right!
So, to recap:
Depth: 14 inches
Width: the measurement you provide
Drops: 5 inches
