ABOUT OUR CHOPSTICKS

Our chopsticks are approximately ten and a quarter inches (10.25") long, a balance between the longer Chinese style and the shorter Japanese standard.
They are made using offcuts of our maple custom orders. Maple is a local, hard and tight grained wood that is ideal for kitchenware. Maple is flavour neutral and will not conduct or affect the heat of the food.
Our wood chopsticks are an earth-friendly alternative to plastic cutlery or disposable chopsticks, and non toxic (as opposed to fancy lacquered chopsticks!). They feel silky-smooth to the touch, thanks to many rounds of high grit sanding and our obsession with attention to detail.

HOW WE MAKE THEM

We mill the maple offcuts into thinner pieces, with each pair being made of two adjacent pieces. We hand shape each chopstick using progressively finer grits of sanding paper, then hand wood burn each pair with a completely unique design. We "de-whisker" each pair twice, which pre-emptively raises the wood grain (meaning they won't "whisker" and become super fuzzy with use).
The colours are hand mixed using Osmo brand wood wax and applied to the top 2 inches of each chopstick. They are then finished with two coats zero-VOC food safe Osmo hard wax oil (this stuff is the real deal, certified for use on baby toys in Germany). The finish penetrates into the wood fibres, strengthening them from within to increase the maple wood's already high structural integrity.  This item was made by our own hands in our studio, located on the traditional territory of the Anishinabewaki ᐊᓂᔑᓈᐯᐗᑭ and Omàmìwininìwag (Algonquin).
